'Bloomberg Technology' Special 04/07: Chip Crunch

287 Megtekintés 30 E

Apr.07 -- The global semiconductor shortage, caused in part by the Covid-19 pandemic, is leading to new business strategies for the sector - including more opportunities for 'coopertition' - or cooperation among usual competitors; consolidation; and new manufacturing investments. On a special "Bloomberg Technology: Chip Crunch," we highlight what executives and governments are doing to create enough supply in meeting the demand that exists across industries like smartphones and autos. Bloomberg anchor Emily Chang is joined by CEOs from Micron and Global Foundries; and the VP of Amazon Web Services who manages the company's cloud infrastructure. We'll also hear from chief executives from Intel, Qualcomm, IBM, and ARM.

Funny how Amazon AWS representative is complaining that x86 chips were lagging in performance while AWS is trying to not adopt AMD EPYC which provides > 2x performance per socket and more than 50% performance per watt. Google and Microsoft are already providing confidential computing and super-computer like instances. AWS subsidizing its own chips while the industry rapidly moves forwards with competitors adopt newer cutting-edge chips is not a good strategy.

How stupid can the market biggest leaders be to say like "Guys stop production the world is going to end short term stop producing our chips!" and now we have this problem??? Why? Becouse fools in company's only look at next Quarter and short term gains! Congratz to the Tesla team who kept looking forwards while others stopped producing and ordering which caused this chip shortage. Thank you market for making RTX3000 serie's even more rare. Thank you reading i love you all stay healthy guys!

The math doesn't add up. The change in demand to near zero from COVID doesn't impact the manufacturing capability. It's one thing if Chip switched production sectors like producing for Smartphones by taking away production from autos. But when every sector is effected, that's a supply issue not a demand issue. And the biggest supply shock in the last couple years was Trump trade war with China that cut off US supply from China. HK and China are the largest chip manufacturers. HK produces about 30% more chips than Taiwan. Hence why China is not facing half the shortage in chips the US is.

      >> It's one thing if Chip switched production sectors like producing for Smartphones by taking away production from autos. It's the other way around. Chips switched production from autos and everything else to PCs (mostly laptops and servers) and tablets because everyone had to switch from working in the office to working from home. Gaming and consoles also had unprecedented demand but GPUs are nowhere to be found because of crypto supply chain getting all the chips at much higher prices. China does not have the same shortages because they did not experience multiple or wide-spread lockdowns.

Ahahaha, that could actually work: The US has labour costs in line with a second world country. At least for low-skilled labour. I suppose you're thinking that you will never be kne of those low-paid people. But remember: Social mobility means that your children could end up flipping burgers their whole life.

    - For streaming stocks, BUY Amazon Prime, Disney+, Netflix. Best companies: Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Nvidia, Microsoft, Netflix so these are the stocks you want to own. Also Wells Fargo, Disney for the recovery. Resistance is futile.
