The Future Of Energy Storage Beyond Lithium Ion

30 412 Megtekintés 3,1 M

Over the past decade, prices for solar panels and wind farms have reached all-time lows. However, the price for lithium ion batteries, the leading energy storage technology, has remained too high. So researchers are exploring other alternatives, including flow batteries, thermal batteries, and gravity-based systems.
CORRECTION (March 14, 2020): At 12:53 we incorrectly identify the size of the energy storage market. Overall, the energy storage market is predicted to attract $620 billion dollars in investments by 2040.

The normal simple battery technology is environmentally safe reliable and inexpensive. The Edison generators and dynamos power systems don't need battery backups but we do need . more reliable and inexpensive and less toxic battery power..

Where is Edison generators and dynamos that easily replace fossil fuels and nuclear power plants without fuel or pollution. We don't need wind power hydro electric power or plastic solar power. Edison generators use the field magnets to move the armature magnets and generator coils of copper wire..

I find the idea that we can't store energy ridiculous. There are many ways to do it and adapting robotic factories to work at times of low demand is one. Also we want to use less energy stop making silly five litre cars when one or two will do slow down a bit.

China can use hundreds pumped hydro lake to store energy by moving desalinated sea water from eastern seaside to western desert. By doing this way, the project can not only store clean energy but also create new farm land and forests in western regions of China. It could cost trillions of dollars, but it is no more expensive than importing trillions of dollars of oil and gas.

What we need to do is stop thinking it has to "compete" with Fossil Fuels. There are some things we just should not be using (i.e. fossil fuels) for the things we do. Just because it is cheap does not mean it is ethical or right or even doable. We certainly should not be using it as the benchmark for price that everything else has to meet. We need to recognize that we are in a different world. The other thing we need to do it stop expecting the market to fix all our problems.....these are very public problems and essential services, why leave them in the hands of private companies.

@Human Being Depends where the "natural" gas comes from of course. Most of it (at least what we use) comes from fracking, which itself creates its own pretty serious consequences. I am not an chemist, but what we need to do if we want to share this planet with future generations of our own blood is to listen to science rather than economics. We have the technology now, but dinosaur economic thinking keeps us from using it.

Gerry S,you know I'd bet you consider natural gas a fossil fuel, even if it's generated in landfills or seeping from old oil wells.Methane emissions generate more greenhouse warming than if you captured it and burned it efficiently. And the cost is lower than gasoline per BTU.Zero emissions wouldn't be feasible unless you convert methane to hydrogen maybe?

how about we focus on connecting electrical grids on two opposite sides of the globe. when it is night on one side it is day on the other, so combined the two plants would provide 24hrs of electricity. We already have cables that connect internet between continents, why not do the same for electricity? Forget storage, sun works 24hrs/day its Earth's rotation that is the issue, not the sun. so eliminate the rotation factor by connecting the opposing grids (or figure out a way to send electricity down from space).

Turn off non-essential functions and shave the prisoners' bodies to conduct energy better and place them into sealed capsules with a good, conducting, pink, gel fluid. Install the cords directly into the producer's spinal cord. Feed them the grains that cows use to consume and the soylent remains of aging producers. (Grain prices will become cheap and abundant as people move to non-pant-based meats.)

Man, those lego-tower batteries building and unbuilding themselves seems incredibly silly, but is actually genius. I want to see if there's a way to get smart parking garages that work like this. If you park at a peak production hour, a crane raises the car up to the top floor, then when you need it back, the crane lowers it to produce energy. I doubt this is more practical than the current brick strategy, but it's fun to imagine.

If electrons move through graphene like massless particles, this implies no energy loss through heat and the potential for a VERY long storage. Obviously, the most efficient battery conceivable would have this property. By twisting a long sheet of graphene densely into a cylinder-shape and isolating the edges well, you'd pretty much have the perfect battery, made out of pure carbon. It's just a matter of how long it takes to come up with a cost efficient graphene technology.

The tower block looks foolish at first, but after some quick math it sort of makes sense. Although it has to cost less than 1M$ per tower, including the blocks to be competitive with current lithium technology. If 1 block wheighs 35 tons and is elevated to 100m, the the potencial energy is 35(0.907k)*9.8*100/(3600k)=8.6kwh per block. With about 2300 blocks that's 20Mwh. accounting for losses 12Mwh is a more realistic number. If a lithium battery costs about 100$ per kwh, then 12Mwh cost 1.2M$ I don't think it's impossible, but probably it's better to invest that money into new technology research than on giant bricks.
