F1 qualifying hasn't always been as simple as three knockout sessions. It's changed a lot of over the years with some being absolutely TERRIBLE.

@WTF1 Me too
@Tomツ No need to imagine.I am here.
@WTF1 And what I hate to see!
Are you sure
Me to
I loved 1 lap qualifying. Should bring it back, just have drivers run in reverse order from the previous race or reverse championship standing order.
either leave as is, or maybe try one lap quali in conjunction with sprint/feature race with reverse grid could be interesting
That last one is just like NASCAR was doing before the pandemic. I would actually love to see it, even if just for one race.
“Would of”
Dropped watching F1 15 years ago and thanks to your videos I think I'll return to it.
And Alonso getting in Q3 wait what
How does the Q3 qualifying work in this season? New fan and trying to learn. 🙋🏼♀️
1 lap quali with the quali order the reverse of the last race or championship standings. That would be insanely awesome
Personally, i hate the current system. I'd like it much more, if there was just one qualifying on saturday, 3 or 5 laps each (+inlap & outlap, because they don't get timed), all drivers starting with a slight delay, no team-tactic of waiting out that other teams "lay down rubber" first. Starting position is based on the last race results. 1st place starts first, getting a bit of a disadvantage. After the 5 laps, the order is decided from lap times. Fastest car gets the pole.
I would like to see them do Q1,2,3 but with aggregate mixed in. Each driver in each session would have to complete a minimum of two laps and their time would be calculated by combining both laps (if three laps are completed then the best two laps would make the final time). This would mean that a scruffy lap could bring consequences rather than the driver just getting another shot at it. This results in not just being fast but also consistent
This is pretty incomprehensible if you didn't already know the history of the qualifying formats before coming to the video...... this was rather more a review without description..... I sadly don'y get the Q1, Q2 ,Q3 let alone most of the others and this didn't help.
i think current format is the best specially because of weather changes it also seems to be the most fair one if in a 1 hour qualifying rain comes in the middle of session the rest will be just a boredom until the session is over Edit: what others here managed is also great idea Q1 and Q2 normally but Q3 everyone only one chance
One lap quali is the ideal situation. Only variables like weather need to be considered.
I love one lap qualifying.
Since it would take too long for everyone to do a one lap qualy, I think Q1 and Q2 should stay the same and only Q3 (top 10) should be a one lap qualifying shootout, i think id be fun and wouldn't take too long. I like the one lap qualy personally, all eyes on one driver giving it everything. its cool.
Stick with the knockout qualifying but in each session have random sprinklers.
I personally want one lap quali to come back as it makes sure the drivers are pushing for the whole lap and it would make me want to support certain drivers and not certain teams
So something to remember is having lots of faster cars at the back during a start is likely to cause more incidents, lap 1 is already very incident heavy as it is. if a faster car has to overtake a much slower car with that car defending the poostion its likely they may accident go into the back of them due to different breaking points and acceleration etc. this is partially why blue flags exist to ensure that backmarkers dont cause incidents and get out of the way. So while a mixed up grid is great, it can also lead to more incdents. 1 shot qualifiing sounds good but its lacks in being fair to everyone as rain slows down the laps and means singular drivers are left out of a good time and also means any small mistake would ruin a lap. Formula E has qualifing done well, It mixes up the grid but also gives everyone a chance to get on pole, If your a good driver you could deal with the track being undeveloped whereas the worse drivers would struggle. Of course you cant really compare the 2 motor sports, F1 is on large open tracks (Mostly) and is generally centered around tirewear, whereas formula E is on narrow street curcuits and is about battery/power mangment. They are different sports, but formula 1 could take some ideas from Formula E, The Supershoot qulaifying for the top 6 drivers could be implemented for Q3 so that all the top 10 could be mixed up while still having the slower drivers at the back.
2:58 what is that photoshop??
I’m subscribed to and I have been for a while
maybe it shouldn't be 1 lap quali but like 3 laps or smth so incase you had an extremely bad lap it wouldn't mean that your whole race is over and that you could still compensate in some way. or maybe a system that counts all of your laps and averages the time so you would have to strive for consistency (but this would cause drivers to probably drive way fewer laps and have way more consistency in the qualifying line up from race to race so probably wouldn't be that fun to watch)
The one lap format is something that is done in the Australian Supercar Championship. There's a set amount of time for everyone to run around and see where they place. Anyone that finished in the top 10 gets a second session, straight after, called the Top 10 Shootout. Brilliant and every lap is incredibly exciting.
I think they should keep the 3 qualifying phases, but then make Q3 a single lap for the top 10. Quickest in Q2 gets to go out last. Similar to the way V8 Supercars in Australia do their "shoot out"
Bring back 1 lap qualifying!!! But with some tweeks... I'd like to see them run in championship order so the slowest cars get the cleanest track, and than have a second super-pole session for the top 6 or 10 to have a second lap (run slowest to fastest). This way you get constant, interesting action on track. Big names/teams at the start and end of the session with the possibility of upsets throughout. Plus smaller teams get more TV exposure, so are more appealing to sponsors, therefore potentially improving the competition over time as well!
They should just make it so fp2 and fp3's time combined sets the running order of a 1 lap qualifying. That would be interesting
Piss contest next....
Don’t you just love how f1 fans complain when f1 sticks to what has worked for decades but when they change it up a bit and experiment, f1 fans have a little temper tantrum.
Ok i have an addition to making the start grid. So the Saturday doesn't change but on Sunday when all the cars line up there will be a 1 lap race so this way u would get spectacular qualifyings and when something happen in that lap a completely mixed up grids and because its one lap the drivers need to take full profit of the opportunities to overtake an other driver to get the best qualifying results
I’ll take a one shot qualy with the order a reverse of the championship standings.
Have a look at the Aussie V8 supercars top 10 shootout. Top 10 drivers get 1 lap to get the fastest time to set the grid
One lap qualifying for top 10 and sorted
1 lap qualifying was awful. As was the 1hr 12 laps as most were done right at the end. The current system is better
I just got into f1 2 years ago thanks to Netflix. After watching these videos I'm realizing how much I've missed out on.
Have Q3 as a one lap shootout
one lap quali is still needed on a few tracks, especially monza
one way to mix things up would be for the top5 or top6 of the last race to get a 1s handicap on their lap times in qualifying the next race forcing them to either push their car to the limit from the very beginning of q1 to even get to q2 or q3 or to work their way through the field... At least that would be one way to get Mercedes more on "level" with the other teams...
I thought the elimination qualifying would have worked if it had been given enough time.
I think the most tricky thing with the knock-out qualifying was that they changed up the rules for the cut-off of the lap. Rather than it being: "you have to have started your lap before the end of the clock" (which we are using now and which it did use for the last to be knocked out), for all other knock outs, it used the "you have to have finished your lap before the end of the clock". This made for some really difficult time in figuring out who was still in the fight and who had gone out too late to make any difference. Not sure if using the other cut-off would've made much of a difference though, but that thing had always struck me as odd, watching that qualifying. That said, I do enjoy the 3-part qualifying we have now, a lot. The only thing I am noticing is that it's getting a bit more stale now than it used to be. Years ago, I know I was always strapped to the edge of my seat for the scramble towards the end of the clock. Nowadays, it does seem that there is less mixing up going on in those final laps than there used to be. Or maybe I'm just starting to become a bit more jaded, not sure ;)
I'm already subscribed
Use something else instead of those all caps text, its not working. do you not have a proper animationist or something
what if u had the q1 q2 q3 system but, the q3 is one shot qualy, the driver who finish 1st in q 2 e the first one to go set time, i think this would be interesting
I'm with Matty on this, bring back one shots! Literally ALL of 2003 was classic, and one shots contributed to that.
I would change one thing: Q1 and Q2 the same, but Q3 could be a 1 lap only. That may spice things up a bit.
I'm in favour of putting *sprinklers around the track* and having them *spray the track* with water at random intervals during the qualifying session, format. (Note to any newbies, this format never existed this is just my idea for creating an exciting qualifying session). Lol When the current (knock-out) qualifying was implemented I thought it was stupid and complicated for nothing. But a few races in made me realize how much better it was closed l compared to the 1-hour qualifying all cars can go out on track session. But yes I agree with Matt, that format gave more surprising results.
One lap quali BUT in driver championship standings order. It wouldnt change that much but it gives chance for slower teams to use some of that rubber left by faster ones
Should have the Q1, and Q2 the same then Q3 have it as a one lap qualifying who ever is 10th in Q2 goes first 1st in Q2 goes last, but in Q3 which tyre you qualify on you start the race.
These epileptic fits of fonts is impossible to watch. Terrible design
The format we have is almost perfect
One day wtf1 will make it so you have to be a nicotine consumer to qualify for f1 race
Lets give the slower cars 1 leading lap, that will mix up the field since you like it that much, you can put the Mercedes cars in the pits without tires, an the mechanics seating, so when the Haas or the Williams or the Alpha Romeo completes the 1st Lap the Redbulls can start racing and Mercedes mechanics can put tires on their cars. That would be amazing.
One-Lap Qualifying in reverse order of FP3 times would be a great way to qualify!
1:15 ok no that format was great imo
1 lap qualifying is the least fair system of them all
they should do an explosive last place like gta
I might be too young to remember the 1h- format, because i was born in 1996 and i didn't watch f1 until 2005, but i like the sound of the format.
1:00 thank you Jean bloody Todt.
Ngl I loved the first format, and I feel that it should come back ;)
Hey @WTF1 are you sponsoring the F2 Renault team? Because: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/61/FIA_F2_Austria_2019_Nr._15_Aitken.jpg
So lets go 1 lap Qual with 3Q knockout sessions next?
The current three stage qualifying works is far better than almost every system because it means constant action throughout the session. And it eliminates rain as a factor if weather changes during qualifying, though whether that's good or bad depends on your (see: Minardi going out first on second qualifying).
How about 1 lap qualifying But the outing order is decided by driver's choice, of which driver with lowest point picks first That way Williams driver can choose the timing with lowest amount of rain and get pole
What about one lap knockout Qualifying?
Monza, Monaco, Mexico City, Spa, and Singapore one lap qualifying would be lit
Could do something like V8 Supercars in Australia, all drivers go out and set there best laps and then the top 10 go to a shootout.
1 Lap quali is totally my favourite. If it had a few tweaks would really help like totally random order of going out. May mean tv figures drop after some guys have gone out but if had Ham out first but Bottas was last one out might make it interesting.
I think they should do a 30 minute open qualifying session. All cars out on track. 30 minutes isn't too long or too short track time, any longer and the big teams would just wait till the last couple of minutes to head out
Why not split the points of the race between quali and the race? The 25 points of 1st place split into 13 points for the race and 12 points for quali, 18 points of 2nd split into 9 each for race and quali, etc. The drivers get points for their quali positions and also their race position. This incentivies drivers to both have good race pace and also good lap times during quali instead of quali just determining where they start. This would also give points to drivers who did deliver good lap times in quali but are unable to get good position in race.
I'd leave it as it is but have q3 be the one lap deal, With the drivers making their lap in the order of q2
I like the formula e qualifying of groups with championship leaders going first when the track's slower. Hopefully they could put something like that into F1, maybe not the same group system but something to just make faster drivers work a little bit harder and make it more exciting
One thing formula E does do well is qualifying. It always makes jumbled up grids. I think F1 should try it someday
5:34 WOULD'VE*
The 12-lap, 1-hour free-for-all was my favourite (especially the last 20 minutes), and not drastically different to watch than the longest running format that preceded it.
I loved the 2-lap system used in the 2004 season. In the 1st lap with the drivers were going out in order of the results of the last race, they set a time to then establish the order for the 2nd lap (the actual qualifying lap for Sunday's race) in a reverse-grid fashion. As an spectator, it gave you 2 laps to see each driver and had the same level of excitement as the 1-lap.
How about a mixture of current and 1 lap qualy, Q1 and Q2 as is and Q3 reverse Q2 order single lap?
I've been watching F1 since the early 90s so have seen a few different formats over the years. I don't mind the current system so much but must admit I've a soft spot for one lap quali. Especially at tracks like Monaco, and it often shook the grid order up.
I´m subscribed and also tell you NO WEIRD IDEAS WHIT MIX GRID that is for F2 nos for F1
I also loved 1 lap quali. Also, running Q3 as a one-lap shootout would be totally feasible. The big downside to single-lap qualifying was "how to decide the running order", but as a Q3 session it's easy: use Q2 times and run in that order. If there's rain forecast partway through that could cause some fun as Mercedes try to make it into Q3 in 9th and 10th so they get to run first, before the weather hits. But with many laps already done that day, the running order should also matter less anyway.
Formula e has a good qualifying format
Bring back one lap qualifying for tracks like Monza with the slipstream.
Q1, Q2 and Q3 Knockout quali is boring af. The 1 lap shootout was the best imo
Formula e has the best qualifying
Matt you the man.We Charles fans need to stick together
CELEBRATE WITH PROSECO REALLY
I think we currently have the best F1 qualifying method, give it a few years when all the new regulations come in and then you will see a more varied line up on the grid.
I will never subscribe unless nikola becomes one of the most important car companies in the world (which will never happen)
The only thing F1 need to do is make a top 10 shootout, that would make it a lot more exciting in my opinion.
4:03 well uh... it turned out the same. Verstappen third, Mercedes 1 and 2.
Ask me to subscribe again, see if it happens
The Australian Supercars has the right idea, several practice sessions for drivers followed by qualifying followed by a top 10 shootout where every driver in the top 10 gets one lap, usually as the day warms up or cools down different drivers get an advantage, plus the rain can be a factor, means that you often get to see a wildcard of sorts on pole
1 lap qually was the best period of F1. Not only was the racing good, it helped mix up the field instead of having Micheal on pole all the time like Hamilton and the boring F1 of the last 4 years. The last time F1 was any good was the Rosberg pushing Hamilton for a few years.
I'd say leave things are they are, BUT if I was to offer suggestions, then... Idea -; Current format, but with only 1 run allowed for Q1, 2 & 3. Top 10 all start the race on their Q1 tyres so you can't really game the system too much. Keep the 107% rule for Q1 as well (With room for special circumstances when appropriate), and leave it to the drivers to pick when they go for their laps
I don't mind the current format, it works well if you've got a few teams at a similar level. It was great in 2010. Nowadays it's a lot more predictable so maybe a change is needed. 1 lap quali was great, especially if it rained right after the Minardis had been out 😋 absolutely loved seeing the cars and drivers blasting around on the limit
For me keep the current system but make q3 one lap qualifying
What about aggregate qualifying but you have to run 4 or 5 timed laps in a single one hour session.
What about for Q3 its a one hot lap attempt each. They go out in the order of championship position (First out First) one hot lap one attempt. Would really test them and they can't complain about traffic. I think it would be good TV and give some slower cars better track quality for a slight advantage, so kind of having elements of a reverse grid, without all the dangers that a full reverse grid would cause.
In my opinion, the 1 lap qualifying is the best way, you need to ace your 1 chance, and a small error can mean many places back. The only issue is the starting order, if everything is fine, the last to qualify get the benefit of the rubbered down track. And varying conditions would make it "unfair" (lane drying, or conditions worsening). Maybe a championship revert order (basically, Hamilton starting first ? :D ) would give a chance to the lesser performing teams to have the better track conditions (until it rains mid session) Anyway, if I was Domenicali, this system would have my vote. But I'm not... Shhiiiiaaaa..
The constant rule changes are why the casual viewer can't be f-ed folllowing f1
I know one-shot was polarizing, but I do think it should make a comeback in some form. Perhaps have Q3 be that way.
The old one hour was the best. Would work well for modern TV as well, as before going out the drivers could cut their silly wrestling style promos and so on.
